Time for a tire change after 4500 miles on my 12 T-Bird. Any suggestions on rear tire? It has Metzeler ME880 Marathon 200/50 ZR17 M/C75W on it right now. My dealer has one for $280 plus $175 mounting. Is this price out of line?

There are many threads of Rear Tyres,

Our "Learned Ol Dumb Pollock" Davetac, would say only Dunlop American Elite. others have gone over to Avons Cobras which can be used both front and back with great success on the front and some success on the rear, and in a lot of cases members have changed the size to a 55 series tyre, which is ever so slightly ( 1/4" or 5mm) taller and at the same time eliminates the 4 to 5 MPH sped error built into the bike.

Dave or one of our US members would have to comment on the price in US $

I have averaged 10,000 miles on each of my Commander II's. It is a 200/55-17.

Unless it's a blonde , only pay $40.00 here to R/R wheel , replace tyre and balance.

I have only run one Avon Cobra,it's on the front right now,has over 15000 miles on it,and still has a long ways to go before it needs replacing. However,I have NOT tried one on the rear,YET.The Dunlop American Elite has been running over 12,000 miles. So until someone finds one that goes further,I'll stick wiith the AE on the rear.Dave!!!

I'm going to Avons, thought my 1600-mile ride last week would finish off the latest Metzler, but it's not quite done.
Paid $317 for the 880 from a Triumph dealer, mounted on rim only - not bike - guessing $175 must include belt/wheel alignment.
Going thru 2 rears to 1 front. 880 has been a great tire except for longevity and expense.

Avon Storm 3D X-M 200/50 ZR17

replaces the storm ultra. Triple ply. Perfect handling. Perfect grip.

Running Avon Cobra on the front and Avon Storm 2 Ultra on the rear to keep the same profile. Have over 5k miles on this set and still have 2/3rds the tread on the rear and 3/4 on the front. Avon is replacing the Storm 2 with the 3D X-M which is supposed to get 15% to 20% more mileage than the Storm. The 3D X-M has a deeper tread which looks like would account for most of the expected mileage increase. Can still purchase the Storm 2 online, but looks like the 3D X-M can be had for not a whole lot more. $175 for install seems high, especially if it's just the rear.

I am running the 3D XM with a cobra on the front. Quite a lot more tread on the XM - hoping for a few more miles than the last Ultra I had on. I got it online for 131GBP (around 216USD) delivered. Plus 10GBP to get someone to fit it on the rim.

Sounds like you like the XM so far, better than the Ultra? I've really liked the Ultra so far so the next one will probably be the XM. Nice price on the fitment. If I could find that around here I wouldn't do it myself. That low profile is tough to slip on the rim, at least for me.

How the hell did you get 18,000 miles out of a front Bridgestone Exedra Max tire??????????????????: The best I ever got outta mine [I ran two of em] was 9000 miles. That's it. Now the Avon Cobra I'm runnin right now on the front, has over 15,000 miles and STILL has a long ways to go. Dave!!!

Well you could have a point Dave. When I purchased the bike it had 7,000 on it but the tires did not look new. I changed them at 18,000 thinking that they were the stock tires that came with the bike new. I did check with the dealer when I purchased the bike and the said they had not been changed but were in good shape. The dealership I purchased the bike from also stated they had done all the service to the bike from new. So I can only be sure on the 11,000 on the front if you take the mileage that was on it off. Bad day today as I am bikeless my bike is in for the 24,000 mile service. I had to drive a car today and look at the weather.

I just got the Avon Storm 3D-XM installed yesterday ($25 to mount/balance btw, but I brought them the wheel off the bike, would have been $75 if I rode in). Haven't had a chance to ride much yet, but my first impression was "Holy crap that's some deep tread!" I have a feeling Avon probably didn't change the compound or construction much from the Storm 2 Ultra, just tack on another 3mm or more of rubber. I hope it handles well with all that rubber! And it would be nice if I can get more than 3k miles on it, too.

Metzler front went 8500 miles, rear went 6500 miles. Both still have a shadow of tread left, but they're done. (Last Metzler front was badly cupped, this one wore out smooth. No change in pressure, suspension, riding or anything else that might explain the difference.....)
Hello Avons!

You people in the northeast must have some ruff roads, like sandpaper, as you seem to get less mileage than anyone else. I got 7,000k on my stock Metzlers and I'm getting ready to change over to the Commander II's $100 to change both with me riding in and them taking them off and installing them so sounds like the OP is getting taken by his stealership

currently on a slow Harley but will have another Triumph eventually
